PRI Show 2023 - DIESEL Motorsports - what did we see?

Performance Race Industry Show 2023 is in the books so how did Diesel Motorsports do at this event and what did I see for results?

As far as attendance it was up and pretty much back to normal levels for Thursday and Friday pre-covid. Saturday was lighter most likely from people going out on Friday evening but still not bad.

As far as the quality of the people coming by the booth it was quite encouraging and very positive for our sport. A lot more diesel businesses and manufacturers were present this year. When we started coming in 2009 DIESEL Motorsports was the only representation in the show and was for many years.

Glad to see so many different motorsports and performance groups gather at the show to discuss business. including the startup of the EPIC engine building series by AERA magazine (Mahle, Total Seal Rings, etc) the day before PRI. I attended it and saw many old faces from the past attending the seminars which lasted all day. Very good information including question sessions for the experts, more diesel engine builders should attend this.

I was especially happy to hear new SEMA/PRI president announce separation from all government agencies at the PRI breakfast! We do not need to let the fox in the henhouse! I have been telling them that for over 10 years! Performance and motorsports is Americana and part of our industry, plus a multi-billion dollar business many of us depend on for a living.

You could tell by the business being done in the building how big our industry has become in sooo many different factions of motorsports.

DIESEL Motorsports had many new tracks and venues stop by and wanted to arrange for new shows, plus many new companies wanting to do business with us. 2024 will be our 17th year in operation making us the oldest sanctioning body for diesel pickups and motorsports.

Finally people are coming back to shows not afraid of the virus or other fears the media has used to keep people bottled up. The downtown area was hopping all three nights and people getting to visit with each other about our industry.

I talked to many new faces and old in the industry over the two days about upcoming years and business in those years. Yes, it is work, but work we enjoy standing on your feet for over 12 hours and talking with people.

Many award banquets are held during the show which we attended as many as we could but time is always an issue. Even our own sponsor ARP won the top SEMA MPMC award for the year, way to go Chris Raschke!

Looking forward to the 2024 PRI Show!

AAPEX 2023 Review - DIESEL Motorsports!

I spent the first day at AAPEX (Tuesday) and into the evening at company VIP parties. AAPEX is quite different than SEMA, we used to call it the hard parts and fluid show. However, it is far from that today! Many companies have booths at both shows but the direction at AAPEX is all business for mass buying into chain stores or service centers on an international level.

There are many companies you would recognize there from the box stores such as Peak, Valvoline, Interstate Batteries, Mahle, CRC, StaBil, and many more! A lot of smaller companies looking to sell to the larger chain stores are there including, yes, foreign companies by country.

A different atmosphere is at the AAPEX show, business dress is expected for meetings with usually the decision makers of the companies. You need to have meetings setup with the right people in order to get business done at this show.

It is fun to look at the many different part options for hard parts and fluids at this show! Many new innovative options are available including many new fluids that make a mechanics life easier.

I looked at CRC's EvapoRust product which literally dissolves rust on all metal surfaces, a huge have to get for mechanics tearing apart older trucks and re-fabricating them.

Off to the side I sat down to rest at a small booth and found new brake pads and rotors for our HD trucks that are far superior to OEM equipment! NewTek which is headquartered only 15 minutes from my office. Again you never know what you are going to find at AAPEX.

I attended the MAHLE VIP Dealer Give-away which was a 1000 hp Corvette or a Crawler JEEP to their best dealer among many of their top management and dealers. Awarded with some of the top racers in the country such as John Force and Clay Milican among many others.

Later I visited Alliant Power to view their new products and met with many new people there including some old friends who they just hired from Diamond Advantage. Later they invited me to their VIP reception where I got to see some diesel shops/distributors I have not seen in years because of COVID. Always good to see people from the beginning of our DIESEL Motorsports years!

It was a very productive day at AAPEX seeing many new products that would help our diesel/gas HD pickup markets along with some very nice people. I did go downstairs to visit the Joe's Garage! A little disappointing to tell you the truth, it did not replicate any garage I know but they had a few vehicles setup with companies pushing their electronic monitoring devices. I thought it would be a real garage setting with problem solving accredited mechanics working on vehicles.

I have to say more people were at the AAPEX show than at the SEMA show if you are measuring all day attendance - very busy!

Always a pleasure to come to this show and view what many of us see at the box stores with many different products of hard parts and fluids. The displays and people working the booths are truly there to inform you of their products and/or services.

SEMA/AAPEX 2023 Review - DIESEL Motorsports!

Every year people who can not go to SEMA/AAPEX ask me how it went and what I saw at the show. Especially since they had to close down during the COVID years!

I have gone for many years and have experienced the days of glory of the auto aftermarket over the years. Saying that everything changes and sometimes for the better or worse depending on your view. Nothing remains the same.

2023 did not disappoint! Is it the same as 1997, 2007 or 2015? No way but after the Covid stall it was a success for both shows. The industry needs the show - period.

I always go on Monday while the vehicles and companies are still moving in and setting up for the show so I can get full view shots of the trucks without people in the way. Too bad SEMA won't let us media in early to get the shots of vehicles indoors on Mondays but they do let us in 30 minutes early every morning. Once the show opens it is very hard to get shots of the special vehicles.

The SEMA show has become somewhat of a world wide car/truck show for the best builds in the country with many of the top builders showing their wares. Inside is what i want to see which is the newest products from all of the manufacturers. So many companies have now combined into one corporation investment but it does give you their products under one banner. This makes the number of booths smaller since they all used to purchase single booths.

Saying that SEMA has filled the spots with new companies and manufacturers. New products are good and some are small so you would never see them unless you came to the show. Unique products for automotive aftermarket is good for our industry giving the performance geeks a chance to design and fabricate better than the OEMs on different model vehicles.

It is what makes America great! Out think the other guy and how to make it better for our vehicles. The big 3 obviously hate this since they are no longer part of the show (in any big way)!

I was surprised to see so many foreign companies represented at the shows and many could not even speak english thus making them useless other than collecting their monies for being there. However, the direction of making SEMA a world event has been transforming for many years so not totally surprised.

A great time to see many people in the industry I have not seen in a few years because of COVID. Always good to network at the show and talk shop with some of the industries brightest people. They all come to one place and that is SEMA.

Now as far as the trucks go it seems the new look for show is not performance but looks. The lifted trucks diesel or gas have very detailed fabricated lift kits that are beautiful plus very large wheels and tires. Many had custom wraps with very nice designs and companies represented on them. It's all in the details that set these trucks apart and the older trucks had some great performance adds to them.

Did I go to the BIG SEMA concerts afterwards, no I did not so I can not report on them. I am there for business with many companies and walk over 6 miles a day seeing them so I am pretty wore out to stay for a concert. From what I saw they had some great acts coming.

DIESEL Motorsports the longest sanctioning body for diesel pickups!

DIESEL Motorsports started in the fall of 2007 as National Association of DIESEL Motorsports as members left the earliest DHRA which started in 2001!

People and companies have come and gone in the industry along with many directions for the industry. DIESEL Motorsports has honored many in our "Hall of Fame" but remember many competitors and people who have built the business throughout the years.

The setbacks have been many from not only the government but mainly from the OEM's and even people in our own industry. DIESEL Motorsports continues to add value to manufacturers and jobber shops by building the business from the drivetrain up to final trucks.

People are keeping their trucks longer so people want them repaired in order to keep them running longer plus the new trucks are well over $70k new!

Rebuilding our enthusiasts trucks have been a booming business that is growing so fast many can not keep up with parts and service because of demand. Believe me it's a good problem to have in our automotive aftermarket business.

Covid changed everything in our automotive business which includes the diesel industry, more demand for work vehicles to perform daily because services are behind on work. The performance is still there but the shops have to be careful what they work on with fear of being turned in to the agencies.

That is why so many have focused on the maintenance segment of the market where the demand is high right now. Our events some years ago made adjustments based on what the jobber shops were wanting for their customers.  Customers come to our events and participate and then hit the shops for improvements or breakage.

The marketplace changes about every 4-5 years so you can imagine the research we do in order to keep ahead of it. I guess that is why we will be celebrating our 17 year coming up! The past 2 years DIESEL Motorsports has been careful about publishing for obvious reasons but i see the EV craze starting to settle down when they have figured it is harder than they thought.

I already knew this because of research in the global industry of supplying batteries along with electrical demands. DIESEL Motorsports will continue to grow because the units are required to service the public and demand of transportation.

Today's modern diesel engine is so much more sophisticated than the ones from the early 2000s! Thus making the demand for parts and service at an all time high. As a shop keep educated on the new systems and available parts from many different avenues.

That is the main reason I have gone to SEMA/AAPEX for over 30 years, it's not to display, it's to do research for our industry!

There is only one original DIESEL Motorsports even though people use our name all of the time for recognition!

Thunder in Muncie - 22 years later! DIESEL Motorsports

Back in 2001 diesel pickup trucks could not run on the drag strips or pull at the county fairs. The originator of a diesel race association was Eric McBride of the DHRA (Diesel Hot Rod Association 2001-2008) started it all at the Gaston Lions Club Park in Indiana. We have kept the event alive and running taking it over in 2009 until 2019 when Covid hit and they shut down the park.

While shut down the Lion's Club did major improvements to the park with new track, club house, lights, sound system and grandstands. They continue to make improvements every year so we came back this year to hold the event again.

Unfortunately Thunder in Muncie had plenty of thunder and storms with 80 mph winds and a 1.5 inch rain Friday night. This set us back a couple of hours on Saturday redoing the track removing the mud. The Lions Club did a great job of giving us a great track for dirt drags and sled pulling for the day! It took them about four hours to rework the dirt track but we got the event done.

The positive of the storms it replaced the 100+ degree days with 90% humidity with a cooler day of 80 degrees and 40 % humidity. It was a beautiful all day with lots of sun and many smiles from people with their trucks.

The truck show had some great entries with beautiful builds with a few gasser models thrown into the bunch. The Best of Show for trucks is a young man who brought this 2001 Ram to the show ten years ago with rust spots so big in it you could put your fists through them. He has now rebuilt this truck to a SEMA quality truck with custom engine rebuild from local Haisley Machine and E&M Fabrication which includes a $12,000 paint job. It is a beauty that anyone would be proud of in the show circuit. The Best of Show for the Car category went to a young man who bought a burned out Jeep and rebuilt from the ground up using a 4BT Cummins as the drive train with complete custom fabrication on the body, bumpers and interior.

Make sure to look through the photo links at some of these builds, some of the best I have seen in quite a few years including the Best Worktruck with custom fabrication for every tool you can imagine.

The dirt drags was sanctioned by KOi Dirt Drags which I have met this year. They supply the race tree with sensors for the track and times. They ran on a 230 ft track with plenty of shutdown in front of them. This was delayed about 2 hours because of the rain received the previous night because it took the crew that long to make the track suitable for today's activities. Any other group would have called it quits with big puddles of mud everywhere but the pros at the Lions Club Park made it work for us.

Run after run the trucks ran through elimination for over 3 hours ending with a the most powerful trucks taking the wins. As you can see from the photos the takeoff is where they accelerate the most for the wins. Lots of power in such a short distance, many reaching 60-70 mph!

Up next was the sled pulling which again was delayed so the track crew could rework the track for pulling. Nobody knows how much weather can effect an event more than the track crew and of course the promoters knowing it will get done.

Starting out with tractors helped the track with lots of weight and big tires plus they put on a good show. The King of the Hill tractors came from local pullers who go down the track going up to 15 mph! Followed by Hot Farm tractor class and a couple of large exhibition tractors.

The pull for the trucks started with pure stock trucks and progressed into Hot Street Trucks with high power pulling the sled. See if you can see in the link photos the puller who had his favorite dog riding in the passenger seat (everyone cheered for him)!

The local 2.6 smooth bore trucks and the 3.0 smooth bore trucks put on quite a show with some powerful pulls many running well past the 300 ft marker. These are the trucks who pull 2-3 times a week locally so most know what they are doing when it comes to pulling. I saw names that pulled at Thunder in Muncie well over 10 years ago but with different trucks. Even though this location is a small venue compared to a fairground or even larger national events, remember this is where it all started! This location holds many memories for this weekend's participants. Even some of my staff has posted photos where they attended this event in 2003 with family members age 2-3 and they are now in their 20s (one even helps us tech at events at 23 years old)!

The finale came from a local who travels the country in a school bus with a 3 jet engine rail #7500 MOD Tractor, Don has pulled with us before as far away as Florida and can put on quite a show.

Overall it was a fun event even though delayed by inclement weather and we saw many friends and competitors I have not seen in many years. This is kinda like running at the track in Indy and kissing the bricks but here it is running the track and kissing the mud! Since 2001 it felt good to be back home again!

A huge thank you goes out to the Gaston Lions Club Park, without their efforts we could have not put on the event this year because of the weather. Another thank you to our ongoing sponsors, crew and competitors who put on a great show.

Horsepower Festival Spring 2023 Review! . . . in Missouri!

DIESEL Motorsports has tried Spring events before and it is a 50/50% shot of dodging severe weather being in the Midwest! We lucked out on this one with 2 days of rain before and after the event on May 13th in Osborn Missouri at US 36 Dragway!

It turned out to be a beautiful warm day with great sunshine and a perfect setting for our event. The Horsepower Festival Spring is one of two such Festivals this year with the 2nd one being held September 23rd in Okaloosa Iowa at Eddyville Dragway!

At these events we combine a car/truck show with swap meet, dyno competition, local food trucks, vendors and drag racing. The drag racing includes local classes along with Diesel Motorsports truck class. Basically an overall motorsports festival with a fairground atmosphere for fans to enjoy all day long.

We moved the Osborn Missouri Festival to Spring in order to accommodate the track's schedule from the Fall which allowed us to open a 2nd one in Iowa. We had a great turnout of a combination of cars and trucks for over 22 categories and 3 Best of Show Awards! It amazes us the top quality of vehicles every year, many of these could easily be on display at industry trade shows. In fact I know of 4 of them that will be showing at SEMA this year.

The Revolution Auto Works Dyno ran many different vehicles trying to register for the highest HP prize with the largest being 789 HP. Many fans liked watching the vehicles run on the dyno while also visiting the Diesel Motorsports Sponsors tent and many other vendors.

The food vendors were busy all day and night along with the track's concession stand. That is one thing our people like to do is try different foods and eat. We had top notch BBQ, local made kettle corn, shaved ice and local ice cream.

The drag racing started around 6pm in the evening with some great local cars and trucks racing on the 1/8th mile track. The winners are listed below with many different classes even including Jr Dragsters. The truck class was a heads up class with a yearly winner taking the trophy home again. The track crew did a great job of quickly running the classes down the track all night long.

It was considered a successful event since we had a great fan base all day and evening watching all aspects of motorsports.

South Coast Gator Nationals Review - NOLA Motorsports Park 2023

This was a NEW venue for the South Coast Gator Nationals at NOLA Motorsports Park for 2023. We didn't know if this would work here since this is a motor course park with very nice settings for the winter months outside of New Orleans.

They do have a mile straightaway on their road course which we used for 1/8 mile No-prep Street Drags and a very large concrete area for a car/truck show among many other activities including food trucks and drinks.

Plenty of room to grow for other activities which includes a offload 4x4 course and pulling track (currently being developed). They have a pro go-cart course along with a drifting pad for more activities including motorsports.

Now we just need to figure out how to adapt this to our Motorsports activities! Let's start with a Car/Truck/Jeep show, there is plenty of room to display plus park the fans. We had over 40 vehicles displaying some really nice vehicles including a couple of Street Outlaw cars. A local NO Corvette club took the honors of having the most entries.

The track provided some nice food trucks with local NOLA food along with local drinks. Some nice motorsports vendors provided some great give-aways for the kids and adults.

DIESEL Motorsports had to bring a portable lighting system in for the mile long straightaway of the road course. We setup in the on strait which is about 2-300 feet long and measured out about an 1/8 of a mile for a short drag strip. This provided a great no prep surface with no surface prep at the starting line.

Most of the vehicles had no problems getting plenty of traction and getting up to speed on the track. We ran ET Bracket, 7.70 Index and heads-up racing on a Pro-tree. It took some testing and setup to finally getting it to work but the competitors had some fun running on this track that had not been used as a drag strip for many years. An experience for not only us but also the track.

It was a beautiful setting with great weather as they were getting an ice storm/snow in most of the Midwest states where we came from the past week. I believe it was sunny and almost 80 degrees most of the day. As always after the event you had many choices of great restaurants or travel 15 minutes and go to Bourbon street for some great sites.

Before we headed out of town we took the opportunity to stop off at the National WWII Museum downtown. It was unbelievable to view some items there including the original designer who was giving tours of the assault beach craft used on the Pacific Islands during WWII.

Our next event is just outside of Kansas City where the original WWI Museum is located and is a favorite of mine to take people to when they come to town.

Photos of this past weekend's event can be seen at this link:

DIESEL Motorsports 2023 - what is coming . . .

Last day of the first month of the new year and are we busy? So busy planning on some new changes, events and direction for our diesel enthusiasts! The confirmed schedule is now up on our web site along with included at the end of this post. Most people don't realize most tracks take the winter off until after the holidays before thinking about the next year ( I don't blame them).

I was so busy I had to cancel a couple of industry meetings I usually attend every year, instead I headed down to a new area of the country for our first event in New Orleans LA! Planning an event anymore takes a lot of time and effort to make sure everything is in place.

Diesel Motorsports has hired a new agency to help with promotions along with some new connections. This opens a lot of new doors for not only our enthusiasts but also the sponsors. Does it sound like we are expanding? You would be right!

DIESEL Motorsports has slowly been expanding the past couple of years during Covid while working quietly on the sides. I decided we needed NEW activities at the venues after conversing with attendees at the shows.

We have added gas pickups in their separate classes along with even some cars/rods at the show-n-shines and racing classes. We have added tractors into the mix on the sled pulling side and 2WD trucks.

Still the diesel trucks dominate our activities but like all enthusiasts our truck owners enjoy ALL motorsports so they welcomed the newcomers. It is entertaining the attendees that makes our sport grow, and many shops have seen their business grow during these times.

We have even added our own mini trade show held in Missouri for the first time this last November. It was so successful we had to move it to a larger facility (70,000 sq ft) in Lebanon Missouri on October 21st! This was a ALL motorsports show with a little bit of everything for all venues. We had over 40 vendors with vehicle displays that filled the 29,000 sq ft expo center. The hotel was filled, they ran out of parking spaces, ran out of food so we had to move it to accommodate a larger crowd.

Will we have the same classes as before? Some changes in pulling, we have added the map-groove classes back in this year in order to grow the pulling sport. We have found that a lot of our pulling trucks could not afford the smooth bore upgrades demanded by other pulling leagues so they dropped out. We WANT them back to pulling with their old trucks so we can grow the sport.

We took a popular event held in Missouri called the Horsepower Festival and made a Spring and Fall Horsepower Festival. Both held with a 3 hour trip from each other. Spring held in our old location at Us 36 Dragway and the Fall Horsepower Festival held at Eddyville Dragway in Iowa.

Another OLD favorite has returned the original Thunder in Muncie since 2001with a NEW remade Gaston Lion's Club Park July 29th. When NO other leagues/tracks allowed diesel pickups to compete this was the original event started by Eric McBride and Gene (Sleddy) Mahoney! Even this will be a first with Koi dirt drags during the day along with truck show then sled pulling in the evening. The park has added a new track, lights, sound system, tower, buildings and grandstands while being closed during Covid. The will bring back many memories for those that attended the original events held there.

The East Coast Diesel Nationals moved to the date June 24th last year and will continue in it's 14th year there with the same activities as before but now allowing all map-groove trucks in racing and pulling! It has worked out better since it is cooler on this date then when we held in in July.

DIESEL Motorsports has always led the way with motorsports in mind and greater horsepower with safety always on the tracks. Families are always welcomed since we run clean and insured events for all ages to attend. Look for more to come this year, it should be fun!
